I had a date nebulously scheduled for sometime this weekend with a guy who lives in Utah. He called and left me a message yesterday afternoon, saying that he had just arrived in California, and wanted to take me to dinner last night. This kind of conflicted with my plans, because I was supposed to be watching the Utah v. Navy bowl game. So I decided to combine the two. I called him back and asked if we could go to dinner at a sports bar so that we could watch the football game over dinner. He said that wouldn't be a problem.
We decided to go to dinner at BJ's on Main street. This was the part where I truly determined that I'm a fan of this guy I was with. We walk in the door and he blows right by the hostess to go check out what's playing on the various TV's. The hostess sort of followed him, and he told her that we were only staying if we could watch the Utah v. Navy game there. One of the waitresses assured us that the large TV that had commercials playing was showing the game. So my date picks out an empty table directly in front of the TV and sits down. The game was actually not showing on the TV, so my date flagged down a waiter and asked him to change the channel and said "no one over here is watching this game." We think that was true. The hostess came over and said something like "oh, you're going to be sitting here?
That's when my date realized that we just walked in the door, blew right by the hostess, seated ourselves, and demanded to have the channel on the TV changed (since it was an NFL game playing on that set). He looked at me and told me that ordinarily he doesn't do that kind of thing and it must be because I'm a bad influence on him. He did apologize to the hostess later, who claims that no one else was waiting to be seated (I'm not sure I believe her since we saw her passing out those little beeper things to the people that showed up right after us), and that it was no problem.
My other favorite moment last night was when the hostess was passing by after seating another group and stopped to ask us how the game was going. My date informed her that it wasn't looking good for Navy, and that they were definitely going to lose. The hostess looked at the TV and said "well you never know, there is still 1:45 left, sometimes magic can happen." I guess Navy wasn't living right on and off the field, because the magic didn't happen and they lost the game. Still it was a really fun date.
