Back in July I was visiting a friend in Northern California, and to make a long story short we went swimming in the ocean, and in my attempts to leave the ocean I ended up getting my head bashed against a rock. There was a subsequent trip to the ER, which resulted in 8 stitches, but miraculously enough the scar is barely even visible.
However, every few weeks since this incident I've received a letter from my insurance company stating that the medical records indicated that there was another party present when the accident occurred, and then asking me to answer a series of questions about the incident, because that party "may be responsible" for some of the damages. The letters also request that I provide them with the other parties name, phone number, and address. Although I initially figured that there was no way they could ever pin the accident on him I've just been throwing the letters away. Today however they called. I didn't hear the phone ring so I missed the call. I'm to the point where I just want them to go away, so I've considered giving them the name and number of my friend. I figure that there is this ever so slight possibility that if the friend in question were to provide them with certain information that they could potentially demand some kind of settlement. I'm not a lawyer though, so who really knows.
So this evening I decided that I've had it with these people bothering me, and that I'll give them the information they want. I left a message with the friend saying that I am going to give out his name and contact info, and if that's a problem he needs to let me know asap. I haven't heard back. I mentioned this to my roommates and one of them told me in no uncertain terms that she thinks it's a selfish mean thing to do to put a friend in that position. I figure that as long as certain circumstantial information isn't divulged to these people there's absolutely no way it could result in any kind of legal action. Even if they were to be privy to all the details I'm not certain that he could be found liable.
What would you do?

i agree with the roommate
The only thing I can imagine is that they think your injury may have been caused by a car accident in which another party was at fault. When it becomes clear that this guy was simply an observer to a swimming accident, there is no way they can pursue him for anything, so I wouldn't worry about having him talk to them. He is in no way responsible for your injury, and he shouldn't have any problem telling them that.
