Dead Fish

San Diego this weekend was pretty anticlimatic. I didn't get called out at all. I got there late Saturday night and Rick (my host) had invited me to a party, but I took so long getting down there that I was forced to decline his offer. And that turned out to be an idiotic decision on my part, because they went out to see the Grunion run, which I'm more than a little sorry I missed.

Rick just left his apartment unlocked and I believed that I was the only one there. I didn't do much, just fell asleep on his couch watching TV. When I woke up he was home and while he was debriefing me on the evenings festivities his roommate came strolling out of one of the bedrooms and started talking about how he had just woken up and couldn't sleep anymore. I said something about not realizing there was even anyone home. The roommate told me that Rick had just told him that a girl was coming over, and so he had gone to bed with his door locked. He told me that he locked the door because he didn't know who it was that was coming over, but he wanted to make sure that I wouldn't come into his room and wake him up, or go in there to watch him sleep, and he was dead serious. Exactly why he believed that might happen remains a mystery.

All day Sunday I was on call, which actually made me very anxious. I'm not really the kind of person that keeps my phone on me at all times. In fact, quite often I just leave it behind all together, or put it on silent and stick it in my purse. So I was pretty paranoid about missing the call, or walking off and leaving my phone somewhere. During church I kept it on silent, but found myself checking it every few minutes to make sure it was still receiving coverage in the chapel, and I hadn't somehow missed a call. It was all for naught, my services were not required after all. Maybe next month...

I decided to hang around after my shift to go with Rick to a bonfire/bbq. It was out on Coronado, and to be honest a big reason for wanting to go is because I wanted to see the Coronado bridge. I've only seen it in the opening credits to Simon & Simon, but it looks impressive. It didn't disappoint me, it was pretty great. Next time I'm down there I want to go see it during the day though.

I pretty much loved Coronado, and the military jets, or whatever they were that flew really low overhead before landing were, well one of my favorite things about the place. Especially since it was foggy, so you couldn't really see them coming, they were just suddenly right there above you.

The whole bonfire was pretty great, but these two girls went out by the water and found a dead fish that had washed up on shore. They put it in plastic bags and hauled it back to the fire. Keep in mind this fish appeared to have been dead for a while, and it smelled really bad. It was one of those weird looking flat fishes. Flounders I think they are. They dumped it out of the bag by the fire and stood there prodding thefish corpse with a stick for a while, before they decided to dump it into the fire. It did smell up the place for a bit, but actually not as bad as I had anticipated. I still just can't quite figure out what would possess a person to drag a dead smelly fish into the middle of someone's birthday party. So weird...but I still really liked Coronado, and although I showered and washed my hair I still smell a bit like a bonfire, just a subtle little reminder of my Sunday night fun.
