The 11th Ward

Yesterday at church in SD I was walking down the hall trying to find a drinking fountain when a guy who did not even look vaguely familiar stopped me and said that he knew me from somewhere. I looked at him for a minute, but I meet a lot of people in San Diego that I can't remember from one month to the next, so I just figured I'd met him on a previous visit. I was getting ready to launch into my "I'm a regular visitor, and we've probably met on a previous occasion here" speech, but before I could get started he asked if I'd ever lived in Utah. I told him that I am from Utah, all the while standing there thinking that "there's no way this guy knows me from Utah. I haven't lived there in five and a half years, and I can't remember the last time I met someone in California that recognized me from my home turf." He asked me what part, and when I told him he said that he also lived there. Then he asked me if I'd ever attended the 11th ward. At that point I realized that he actually does remember me from Utah, and I still have absolutely no memory of this individual. His name doesn't sound at all familair.

We talked for a while, and he seems nice, and very normal so it's not creepy, I just wonder how it is possible for me to remember nothing about this person. Then I was thinking about it on my drive home and I realized that this shouldn't surprise me. I don't remember very many people from Utah at all anymore. I got on that classmates.com website a while back and after scrolling through the names logged off and decided that I was either even nerdier than I remember (and I don't see how that's even possible), or I was even more oblivious than I realized, which is entirely possible. I was trying to remember the name of that Bushnell girl that I was friends with from kindergarten through high school, but after a while I just gave up. I don't know what her name is and if I ever see her again while I'm home I probably won't recognize her anyway. I guess my memory for people is just as bad as Sarah's...okay, maybe not that bad, but it's still pretty bad.

Yeah, I can't remember her name either, but I do remember her brother, Jason. That's the ridiculous thing about my memory -- it holds on to information I could never possibly use and discards all the useful stuff.

It was something weird like Nalyn. I'll keep thinking about it.
