My Personal Bodyguard

Patty and I have started going on little...okay, actually kind of long walks in the evenings, which have thus far been more like nights rather than evenings. All the same last night I drove up to Rossmoor to meet her around 10. As we started off down the street Patty was telling me that despite the fact that Rossmoor is a really safe neighborhood, she thinks it's sort of scary to be out alone at night because it's so quiet (aside from the incessant hum of the 405 in the background), and no one seems to be out, but then you'll run into someone out by themselves running or walking the dog, etc. I see her point.

We were maybe a quarter of a mile into things when all of the sudden Patty, stopped talking mid-sentence, turned around, and grabbed my arm, all at the same time. I had no idea what was going on, but when I looked behind me we saw some guy come running out of the dark, up the street past us. Patty said that she just heard running footsteps behind us, but couldn't see anyone there, "but did you see my cat-like reflexes? I was ready to throw you to the ground so I could take them on." Not only am I'm grateful for her willingness to beat down an attacker, but I'm additionally grateful for the fact that her "cat-like reflexes" sort of paused to make a full assessment of the situation before I was thrown to the ground. I'm not sure how willing I would be to go walking with her in that neighborhood again in the future if I thought I might wind up face-first on the cement everytime we encountered someone out for a run.
