Turns out that Jared is friends with a Russian sniper. The two of them planned a Labor Day bbq, and afterwards Jared planned a little shooting excursion. I guess Jared was dying to see the sniper's sharp shooting skills in person. I was pretty enthused about the shooting trip myself since I recently arranged the purchase of a .22 rifle from Cousin Glen over the phone. He dropped it off at the Hexberg's on his way to the game, and threw in a brick of rounds for good measure.
Anyway, we loaded up the rifle, and stopped in Eagle Mountain to pick up Glen, who had overbooked himself and couldn't go. Glen still lent us a few other .22's to shoot and some other rifle, which I can't remember what it was. Significantly bigger than a .22, that's about as specific as I can get.
We got all the way out to the shooting spot, and found out that because I am somewhat prone to lapses in my mental awareness I got out of the car at Glen's house with the brick. I handed it to Jared to hold for me, who also wasn't paying a lot of attention, and he set it down, and neither of us noticed. So we wound up out on the side of a mountain, with a trunk full of .22's and no ammo. We still shot up some of the targets with the other rifle that Glen had lent us, so the trip wasn't a total loss. From what I can gather Jared was performing on par with the Russian sniper when we had to call it quits and get home.
I was in the car Sarah drove and we went directly home with Thor screaming at the top of his lungs in the back seat. Jared and his car stopped at Glen's to drop off the borrowed weaponry, and get the still unopened brick of .22 rounds. Better luck next time I guess, and maybe next time Glen can make the trip.
As a side note, Jared did inform Sarah and I when he got home that despite the fact that I didn't bother to do my hair that day Vlad, the Russian sniper thought I was very attractive. So it would seem that despite the fact that I walk around absent-minded, at least I manage to hold my appearance together pretty well while I'm at it.
