I was trying to think of new things I could do at work to kill time. It's harder than you may think to waste hours and hours of time while sitting at a desk.
I was wondering today what my boss would think if I brought in a box of crayons and some coloring books. He would most likely have a problem with that. I thought about painting my fingernails, but I'm afraid the fumes would bother my coworkers. I can download books on my phone, but I've already complete the Time Machine by HG wells, and I'm more than halfway through Robinson Crusoe. The problem with a lot of interesting activities is that my desk is set up in a very visible area.
Our boss called us into his office a few weeks ago to inform us that in November we will all be moving upstairs, and that all of the people being laid off at the end of the year will be seated together in one isolated area. He wanted us to know so that we didn't feel like we were being singled out. I offered the comparison of a leper colony and I think it took him a second to realize that I was amused, and not offended. I can't wait. I figure once they quarantine me with all the other short-termers I'll be far less visible, and can get away with doing all kinds of things to pass the time that I can't do right now.
Anyone have any suggestions for things I can do to pass the time right now? If I ever get around to buying the textbook for my family law class I could probably do some homework here. I know Steve does that sometimes for a Japanese class he's taking.

Jared can attest that I have wasted hours on this site: www.typeracer.com. It will just look like you're busy typing away. Also, you can do genealogical indexing online if you can get the app to install on your work computer. I doubt anyone would realize what that was all about.
Maybe you should look into some kind of independent study course you can do online.
I tend to waste my hours semi-productively on wikipedia, looking up new and interesting facts. The island where Napolean was exiled, for example...
And did you know there's an island on Utah Lake used exclusively as a bird sanctuary?
Here is good way to give of your time. It is 100% legit - http://www.freerice.com/
