I telemarketed for a good chunk of time at BYU. It's a horrid job, but pays well, and I always told myself that "I'll do this now, and get through school, so that I never have to do this kind of work again." Then proposition 8 came along...
The "yes on 8" campaign set up a system where volunteers can connect their phones to a dialer, and we call people to try and get them to vote yes, teach them about the proposition, and make sure that those who are in support of the proposition know to vote "yes" since it is worded funny on the ballot. Also we're calling today and tonight to make sure all of our yes voters have a way to make it out to the polls. I did some calling in San Diego a while back, when we were still calling off of hardcopy lists. Then they switched over to the computer system and it turns out that my phone couldn't connect. So I haven't been able to make calls, until last night when after an hour of trying I finally connected. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing... Well actually it's definitely a good thing, because it was nice to be able to help in the effort, but it did reinforce in me my dislike for phone work. I only got yelled at twice, and only one of those people called me a bigot. It wasn't so bad I guess.
