Virus Alert

My laptop has contracted a virus, and is currently out of commission. This is not entirely surprising seeing as how I recently completely uninstalled the firewall. I know you are reading this wondering "what kind of an idiot intentionally uninstalls their firewall and then goes live on the internet?" Turns out that I am just such an idiot, but I'm going to drag my dad into this to share part of the blame.

Right before one of the BYU games I went to turn on my slingplayer to make sure everything was up and operating properly before the parents left for the game. I kept getting an error message that the slingplayer couldn't connect to the slingbox. I called my dad to see if he could figure out what was going on. My dad stubbornly insisted that the problem had something to do with my firewall, and was not at all related to the fact that he had switched internet providers the day before. After an hour of trying things we made a desperate move. My dad told me that I should uninstall my firewall all together to see if that resolved the issue, and I did it.

For the record the slingbox is still not working, and now the computer isn't working either. I'm not sure how to proceed from here. The windows firewall has locked me out of the internet completely, so that the only website I can access anymore is some windows website that claims for $50 they can remove the virus and install a real firewall. It also appears to have disabled spybot. I have considered going in and uninstalling that firewall as well, but I don't know how stupid of an idea that is. Maybe I should stop uninstalling things.

Run spybot & adaware, then google info on the name of the website and that might help you get info on how to get rid of it.

If all else fails, I bet the Geek Squad at Bestbuy can fix it for about $50.

You might want to reread that last paragraph. Spybot is completely disabled, as is the internet.

I got a very similar virus on my work computer. It's a virus that basically hacks your computer and corrupts every internet link so it keeps going back to the same web page over and over. It also put a new image on my desktop with some "Alert" about how my computer was infected.

I solved the problem by installing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It's a free program that took the virus off. I had to download and save the install files onto another computer and transfer it over via my work e-mail (you could also use a jump drive). Good luck.

Seems like kind of a convoluted story...makes me wonder if you actually contracted the virus from visiting illicit websites and are just trying to cover your tracks.
