I went to my first night of Alternative Dispute Resolution tonight. Five minutes in the classroom and I knew that it's going to be a very long semester. There are a few things people can do to bug me, but there is nothing that irritates me more than when people talk to me like I'm stupid. This instructor does not believe that anyone in the class has a brain. He told us that we will need to do all of the reading for his course, not once, but twice before a test. He actually came right out and said that he's certain that no one in the class can possibly understand the material after only one reading. Half the time I don't even do the reading once.
I was sitting at the back of the class during our 15 minute break, silently resenting this man for assuming that I'm stupid. Then the woman next to me and the woman in front of me struck up conversation. They were talking about how the woman next to me had dropped out of a class they had together last semester. The woman in front asked her what had happened and she said that she'd been placed on academic probation. At this community college if you get placed on probation they restrict how many credits you can take. She told the other woman that she was forced to drop several classes until she got her grades up, and in the meantime she went home to tell her husband, and had a meltdown. After that I decided that maybe advising the class to read the text twice isn't such a bad idea after all.
