California's Proposition 8

People living outside of California keep asking me what's going on with Prop. 8. Unfortunately I have to say that it would seem that the majority of the population doesn't know what's going on, and they remain shockingly ignorant as to far-reaching implications of legalizing gay marriage. As one of the church going I would say that the biggest concerns for me right now are that the churches in the state will lose their tax exemption. There is some speculation that churches that preach against homosexuality, and refuse marriage to same-sex couples will be sued for hate crimes. Equally disconcerting is the possibility that children will be taught gay marriage in schools, and parents will have no right to object. At this point I think it would be naive to assume that school kids aren't going to be exposed to homosexuality, but having it taught to them in a classroom by their teacher is an entirely different matter all together. You can add to that the legitimate concern that this is going to give the green light to polygamy. As much as polygamy fascinates me, I'm from Utah and I know what a thorn polygamy has been in the side of my home state. Why anyone would consider something that would allow for even the slightest possibility of legalizing polygamy is beyond me. Whatever your political leanings are, I can't see any compelling reason to vote against proposition 8.

The coalition that was formed by community churches to promote the proposition has had people out knocking doors, and making phone calls. We've been asked to place prop 8 signs in our yards and windows. Proposition 8 commercials have started playing on TV the last couple of weeks, and there are a bunch of fundraisers and rallies coming up. I hope it's enough.
